QUEERING MICHTLAN - Nov. 4 - 18 2006
Saturday, November 4 / 7-10pm
A group show featuring work of:
| Alma Lopez | | | Rigo Maldonado | |
| Maritza Alvarez | | | Brenda Xavez | |
| Lizette Sanchez | | | Francisco Dueñas |
Casa Coyo, a new cultural arts organization, is proud to present Alma Lopez, Rigo Maldonado, Maritza Alvarez, Brenda Xavez, Lizette Sanchez and Francisco Dueñas in the group show entitled Queering Mictlan. Through various mediums, the artists evoke our ancestors who live in Mictlan, the Aztec/Mexica underworld of the dead, to guide and nurture us, bringing us strength, courage and wisdom. Through installations evoking the four directions, the artists honor nature as sacred in an expression of gratitude to Coatlicue, our mother earth/nuestra madre tierra by honoring life, death and ultimately rebirth. Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos is an indigenous tradition dating more than 3,000 years in Mesoamerica. Due to the conquest and systematic destruction of the codices and other sacred writings, scarce accounts exist documenting this ceremony. Casa Coyo recognizes that to practice this sacred ceremony in the face of forced colonization has been an act of resistance. Queering Mictlan, Casa Coyo?s Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos exhibition, boldly continues this tradition of resistance by honoring our ancestors via the voices of queer artists. In these times of war, destruction and fear, Queering Mictlan is the reclaiming of Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos as one which recognizes the queer voice as a source of insight and inspiration. From the queer who historically has been raped, tortured, burned at the stake and denied equal rights, we now have a call to heal mother earth and each other. To honor nuestra made tierra, to treat each other with love, respect and understanding. Queering Mictlan is a rebirth, the harvesting of just path. It is here in Aztlán, the womb of our ancestral home, that we begin this journey. Please join us on Saturday November 4th to celebrate the opening of Queering Mictlan at compact/space, located at 1307 South Union Avenue at the corner of Pico and Union in Los Angeles. There will be Danza Azteca, presentations by the artists, an open mic for poets and writers, music by John Axume, pan dulce/sweet bread and a community altar. Please bring pictures and mementoes to contribute to the community altar. The exhibition will run from November 4th to November 18th, 2006. For more information, contact:
